#3 – Chin Chin Chocolate Salami
I was torn between making Rocky Road and this Chocolate Salami – guess what won :)? But why? The Rocky Road seemed too close to my Trail Mix, so I leaned into the Chocolate Salami, or Salame al Ciocciolato in Italian.
Traditionally, cookies form the base of this. I think of chin chin as part cookie, cracker, cake and felt like the crunchy texture would make it work. And it did! I think there was also an element of nostalgia as many moons ago, before I learned to bake proper, I would make a similar no-cook cake with digestives, and dried fruit. It looked beautiful and gave me a deep sense of accomplishment.
This makes me think of kaleidoscopes and stained glass and they taste really lovely.
What I like especially is that you can use store-bought Chin Chin. Remember our tips? We’re leaning into having a restful, paced season.
My Tips
- Use store-bought chin chin if you like
- A mix of milk and dark chocolate balance the flavors, and stop it from being overly sweet
- Think about the mix of colors you want – I used pistachios and cranberries but green pumpkin seeds – if you like the flavor could also work
- Cool them properly
- I think you could also set in a baking loaf tin, being sure to smooth out the top, and then slice – but then it wouldn’t be salami 🙂
Do they make good gifts? Yes, they do. Slice and pack in boxes or bags and gift to your heart’s content!
I hope you enjoy this.
